1993 and 2001 Bombings of The World Trade Center
The World Trade Center is a complex of several New York buildings that were the center of terrorism attacks in 1993 and 2001. The complex is located in the Southwestern part of Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey built it as a central facility for government agencies and businesses involved in international trade. The World Trade Centre was the tallest twin structure forming a beautiful skyline scenery in New York until its bombing in 2001. The complex holding 110 stories was designed by Yamasaki Minoru and officially opened in 1972. The first attack in the World Trade Center happened on 26 February 1993. A bomb exploded at the underground garage of the complex damaging its base. Six people lost their lives while 1000 others were injured (World Trade Center history, n.d). The basement was repaired and the building opened for business. The second attack that was more severe than 1993 happened on 11 September 2001. The terrorists flew two commercial planes targeting each twin tower at 8.46 a.m. and 9.03 a.m., respectively. The two towers collapsed from the impact that weakened them. The incident killed 2977 people and injured several others. Rebuilding took a long due to the impact of the attack and the proposals for a better design (Farrell, 2017). The 1993 bombing officially opened America to war with the terrorists, which led to the subsequent bombing of the complex in 2001. This essay analyzes the history behind the bombing of The World Trade Centre and the investigations by the authorities to bring justice to the affected people.
