Voter turnout refers to the number of eligible voters who cast their votes during an election. Many democratic nations have experienced a decrease in their voter turnout even after increasing for many years. The United States also has experienced fallbacks in its voter turnout, with almost half of citizens in the United States deciding not to participate in elections (Sablich, 2016). Various factors such as indifferences and disenchantment have led to a decline in voter turnout. Also, the large population of folks not eligible to vote is another factor resulting in lower voter turnout. The paper denotes how to apply the automatic voter registration policy in all states to increase voter turnout.
Generally, other democratic countries focus on campaigns to promote voter turnout and registration. Voter registration challenges contribute to the suppression of voters, preventing the hearing of voters’ voices. Individuals can exercise their powers by electing local, state, and national leaders who reflect their communities. Voters can diversify government bodies by incorporating a larger society, such as people of color and LGBTQ candidates. However, voter registration is among the significant barriers voters face as they try to get to the polls. The process can be very confusing for certain people, such as youths (Carrillo, 2021). For instance, college students studying in different states view the registration process as a challenge, and the majority of them do not know what they can do. Also, it complicates things for low-income communities and people of color. Automatic voter registration can help eliminate all the challenges and increase voter turnout. It will also reduce voter purging and allow the hearing of additional voices.
In addition, AVR readjusts incentives and shifts the voter registration burden to the state, encouraging voters’ participation.
