Impact of the Meiji Period on Japanese Literature
The Meiji period transformed the political, social, and economic aspects of Japanese society. All the people in the society incurred a series of changes they could not ignore. Literature writers had to change their modes of narration. On the other hand, the people living in and after the era understood both past and current literatures in the new perspective brought by the ideas in the period. Therefore, after Meiji period, reading Ota’s narration would raise the perspective that he was right to leave his Pregnant Germany lover, Elise, to focus on his career and adopt the new political ideas required for success in the acquaintance of political positions after the era.
Ota Toyotaro went against societal ethics by leaving his pregnant Germany lover to pursue his bureaucratic career. Ota had two options: either staying in Berlin or going back to Japan (Yao, 2015). His desire for political positions could not allow him to stay, and he defiantly left his lover, termed as the dancing girl in his narration, to go back to what he wanted to achieve. While the action may be unethical, anyone in Ota’s position would possibly understand why he chose that path instead of staying to wait for the birth of his child. The changes happening during the Meiji era demanded such an effort, and Ota would have missed the chance of achieving his anticipated political positions if he had not gone back to further his studies (Keene,1956). Thus, reading the narration in the period after the Meiji era raises the platform for a new understanding and reaction to the action (Shamoon, 2011). Ota had to choose the option of leaving to secure his future. On the other hand, the argument does not change the fact that he offended Elise (Van Compernolle, 2004).
