Assignment 1: Artist Biography and Internet Bibliography

Worth 20% of final grade
Late Submission Policy
This assignment is subject to the Late Submission penalty policy, namely 5% per day for three days.

Assignment Objective
To acquire a sound understanding of the life and work of a major Renaissance artist or architect and to develop a discerning and critical awareness of the varied sources available for research on the internet.
This assignment consists of two related parts:
1. 1. A short biography and career overview of ONE artist / architect selected from the list below.
2. An annotated internet bibliography related to the artist you have chosen.
Instructions
Part 1: Artist Biography
Pick one painter, sculptor, or architect from the list below and write a brief synopsis of their life and work. You should include biographical information (significant events of their life, etc.) and also an overview of their major artistic works.  You may be as creative as you like in your presentation, keeping in mind that clarity of information, thoroughness, and concise presentation will all be factors.
Length for this section: approximately 2 – 3 pages of text; pictures are supplementary to this length requirement (Arial or Times Roman font, 12 pt – or similar).Note: Because this is an art history course, visuals are welcome. In this assignment, and in all others in this course, you may freely use as many images as you wish.  However, keep two things in mind:
1.
1. Use images effectively. If you are describing something that you think your reader would understand more clearly with an accompanying image then include it along with the description.
2. Don’t let an image ‘speak for you.’ That is, don’t include an image unless it is a visual aid or visual accompaniment to a point you are making in your text. 
 Part 2:  Internet Bibliography (Virtual Field Trip)
Compile a list of 10-15 links to websites that provide information about the same artist from Part 1. Each link/entry is to be accompanied by a short (one to three sentences) description of the site (is it a personal blog, an image repository, a museum website? etc.), and organized in such a way as to feature the best and most useful sites.  Each entry should include the url, the title of the site, and a synopsis of the information found there. When possible, include an assessment of the quality of the site and its relevance – noting, for instance, if the site is factually based, or largely opinion.  Ideally, approximately 10 – 15 websites should be listed, covering as broad a range of approaches as possible.
Marks will be given for the thoroughness of the list, as well as the descriptions and organization of the sites.
Note: It would be wise, of course, to be compiling your internet bibliography as you do the research for your artist biography!
An example of a single proper entry would look like this:

Cimabue, whose real name Bencivieni di Pepo was born before 1251—died 1302. Cimabue was a chief Florentine painter, who was a forerunner in the artistic movement to naturalism in his time. Some of his current works include; the murals of New Testament scene, the Madonna; and the Madonna Enthroned. Cimabue established three-dimension strategies using the Romanesque method, with Byzantine models and feudal methods to make his own style. Cimabue developed existing styles of painting to establish more life-like and related figures, making the more accurate to the audiences. Cimabue may not have been received recognition for several changes in art styles during his time, but he was big donor and main force of naturalism in art and the pragmatist movement.
There is very less documentation concerning Cimabue’s early life and training in art. It was believed that He was born in Florence and deceased in Pisa, Italy. ("Cimabue, Maestà – Smarthistory", 2020). There are various works credited to Cimabue, though, only the Mosaic of St. John the Evangelist which was established in around 1304-1306 was dated with certainty. His first credited work, Crucifixion, in Arezzo was thought to have been established in around 1270. Cimabue was greatly influenced by the Greek Scheming elegance, but he created his personal additional natural elegance of these traditional themes. Cimabue was the first artists to leave the traditional, hoping to find more beauty in the in the authenticity of nature and life. Alongside with the customary stylization of human custom, He appears to have been amongst the very first individuals to advent to a close reflection of nature. Cimabue was also regarded to be the first person to identify the potentialities of decorated architecture, which he recommended into his acts in order to give sign of dwelling and a sensitive logic of three-dimensionality.
Cimabue operated with egg tempera on board in order to establish his frescoes or religious frescoes, and painting. Cimabue’s subjects were of the crucifixion, saints, and scenes from the Apocalypse.
