Emerging after the end of Second World War, suburbia transformed the architectural, residential, and the economic development of the 1950s. The United States perceived a boom in the population with more people moving into areas known as the suburbs, which were growing at a faster rate due to low construction cost. The development of the suburbia was as a result of historical powers, as well as the mass demobilization, social heritage of the depression after the war. The spread of suburbanization across the United States led to an economic boom due to an increase in the sale of houses because of their accessibility to many veterans who returned. The majority of the African-Americans moved from south to north, with an increased number of Americans moving from the cities and the rural areas to the suburbs. The American life was redefined by this new population centers, posturing a challenge for America's obligations to opportunity and equality.
After the World War II, the American soldiers were eager to reunite with their families. It was a difficult transition for the African-Americans, veterans coming home after the Second World War. The veterans were treated better in Europe as compared to the prejudice and racism they experienced in America. In June 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act with the hope of providing the service and women with a measure of financial security upon their return. The GI Bill successfully propelled Americans to new heights of education, fueling the economic prosperity that characterized the postwar era. Veterans were offered a year of unemployment pay after their return home, which included loans to purchase a home, start businesses or farms, and cater for tuition or college programs. Education in America was reinvented after the veterans were sent to school in the decade after the Second World War by the GI Bill (Boulton, 2014).
