Worldview and Nursing Process Personal Statement
'Does God sit down and create everything by hand? Does He sit on a cloud and showers down the rain from a sieve?' I asked curiously. 'Well, you see, before everything was created, God spent millions of years planning out everything. He laid out the design of the entire universe, its processes, the forces that drive it, and then when he was done planning, He said, "let it be," and there it was!', My dad replied, with a cheerful voice crack at the end. At ten years old, I did somehow understand what my father meant, but I did not pay much attention to it. Growing up in a Christian household, my parents taught God. I observed both my religion and my life through my experiences and learned from my beliefs. My parents inculcated in me the belief that every human being, everything that exists, is created for a specific reason and serves its specific purpose in life. And for living organisms, that is their niche. I believe that God exists and that he is the sole creator of everything. 'In the beginning, it was the Word; the Word was with the God, the Word is God' (John 1: 1).
Through my faith, I learned, quite early on in my adult life, that caring is the manifestation of the silver lining between human suffering and hope for a better life or hereafter. I believe that the concept of caring is our primitive trait, a moral imperative that reflects interpersonal relationships in our lives guided by the therapeutic intervention (Rieg, 2018). My worldview was shaped by the presuppositions that I inherited from the people around me, including my family, teachers, and mentors. It is a product of my upbringing, cultural influence, traditions, social interactions, academic learning, passion, and commitment to my career and people throughout my life up till now.
Nursing, in my opinion, is an attribute of God that serves to heal those in pain and ensure comfort and health. In the modern world, we apply our acumen and skills to provide care to people in mental and physical distress and become a source of relief for them. It also enhances the growth of human connections, the development of one's character, and the ability to channel personal suffering, hardships, and weaknesses for the betterment of other people and their problems. Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring has been quite a guidance in my career as an aspiring APRN because it emphasizes sustaining the humanistic-altruistic nature of care (Brewer et al., 2020). Watson's theory focuses on commonly known care practices. Besides, the theory is centered around empathy and promotes a more sentimental approach when it comes individual's required well-being.
Watson reflects that empathetic caring rejuvenates one's liveliness and capabilities. In my experience so far, I have noticed that the theory is most practically applied in Palliative or End-of-Life care. I observed how the continuity of a positive attitude, the extension of physical, emotional, and moral support is integral to caring for people battling serious and life-threatening illnesses.
