Imagine you are the school district food service director and the district dietitian in your town. You have been thinking about whether or not to include organic vegetables and fruits in school menu. Conventional foods are quite cheaper when used in the school menu. They cost the district 10% less compared to organic foods. However, the district wishes to include these organic foods, i.e. vegetables and fruits, in the school menu. There are several reasons that surround this decision. One is due to the nutritional value that these organic foods have on consumers. They are known to be healthier due to their large composition of nutrients, mostly vitamins, which are vital especially with these growing populations in schools (Funk et al. 2016). Another reason is its availability. Study shows that a high percentage of organic foods are grown locally with little being exported. It means that the growth of these foods is controlled hence limiting the chemical and other intoxicants that may be associated with these foods.
Another reason is that growth of organic foods is significantly controlled about the pesticides used, the fertilizers used and bioengineered genes, i.e. GMO’s are not used in the growth of these natural foods. It makes them not only healthy but also safe for consumption. The Department of Agriculture under the Pesticide Data Program (PDP), plays a significant role in ensuring that organic foods are not subjected to pesticides that may translate to them being unsafe for human consumption (USDA, 2018). The thought of including vegetables and fruits in the school menu has been motivated by these factors (Robinson et al. 2019). However, their high prices call to the need for the district to strategize on how to allocate more funds to the food program to accommodate the additional costs necessary for the program to adopt these organic foods.
The decision to use fruits and vegetables in the school program will build on various aspects in the district. One it will promote the health of learners since these organic foods are known for the diverse health benefits the possess (Robinson et al. 2019). The other area is that it will promote the economy of the district by providing a ready market to the producers of these foods hence increasing profits and reducing losses incurred with these highly perishable goods. The other factor is that it will promote agriculture in the district by providing a ready market for the foods.
