The United States (US) Healthcare System
The U.S. Healthcare System ensures high quality and efficient care by enhancing the labor force and focusing on the population rather than in politics. Greater access is guaranteed through the extension of the employer-based and community-based on-site and near-site hospitals and clinics (Vogenberg, 2019).
Healthcare Delivery
Although the U.S. is one of the most industrialized countries in the world, its healthcare delivery system contains several pros and cons which include the following.
Most patients will benefit from its highly technology-based assessments and the presence of the Affordable Care Act. A high technology-focused healthcare system is more practical and efficient. It can also lessen the margin of error in the diagnosis (Nikolai, 2017). On the other hand, the Affordable Care Act, ratified in 2010, recognized the shared responsibility among the administration, employers, and employees for guaranteeing that all Americans have a right to avail of high-quality health insurance (The Commonwealth Fund, n.d.). This mandated employers and/or individuals to avail insurance. In cases where the individual is financially incapable, s/he can avail it through public funding such as Medicaid or Medicare. Due to this, a drastic decrease in the number of uninsured people was seen from 2013, where there were 41 million uninsured Americans 32.3 million in 2014. People of color, low-income people, and adults comprise the majority of the diminishing numbers (Department for Professional Employees, 2016).
By contrast, the cons include the following: 1) The U.S. has limited access to healthcare since there is no universal healthcare act.;2) U.S. healthcare is a luxury.;3) An appointment is necessary before an actual treatment will be given. This factor may increase the patient’s burden of disease (MIT Medical, n.d.).
Finance
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international council dedicated to international development states that although the U.S. government has spent high amounts for the health expenditure per capita which is more than twice of $3,453 mean of all the OECD countries, the U.S., together with the Mexican government, contribute the least to majority of the healthcare finances. Also, the OECD found out that in 2013, the U.S. government exhausted an amount of $8,713 per individual or 16.4 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) (Department for Professional Employees, 2016).
Management
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is responsible for the proper management and effective delivery of health to all Americans. They provide programs to its different agencies and offices. Furthermore, the secretary of HHS is accountable for the allotment of budget and monitoring of the performance of each of its branches (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.).
