Training A Beginner Group for a Half Marathon Event
Long-distance running is growing in popularity, with particularly more casual runners taking part in half marathons. For instance, 15 450 people ran in the Dutch Rotterdam Marathon in 2017, an increase from 200 in 1981 (Fokkema et al., 2020). Long-distance running essentially involves both aerobic and anaerobic energy generation modes. Increasing the aerobic threshold means that the athlete can run for more without straining and switching to anaerobic energy generation (Hilditch, 2014). Most half marathon runners complete the race after 25 mile-per-week training; therefore, this will be my foundation for athletes with weaker endurance, while the consistency of 35 miles per week will be the aim for athletes with moderate endurance. A 5 to 10 % increase in the total mileage per week will be the aim every week after the athletes achieve the set...
