Influenza Flu Vaccine among the Elderly
Professional Capstone Project
NRS-441V
Professor Melissa Reedy
January 04, 2018
Background
The elderly are vulnerable to seasonal influenza and related complications including pneumonia as they have low immunity. Influenza vaccine among elderly is one of the ways to reduce such health complications and the preventive measure is potentially effective in reducing the flu burden including hospitalization rates and deaths (Smetana et al., 2017). Since there are secondary complications associated with seasonal flu, preventive measures should be prioritized to improve health outcomes. The problem to be addressed is the effectiveness of influenza vaccination targeting the elderly during the seasonal flu periods.
Problem statement
As the population of the elderly increases, this will result in higher medical costs, while even the younger people are hesitant to get flu vacations. This increases the risk of the contagious respiratory diseases spreading and compromising the health of the elderly populations. If the influenza vaccine is effective in reducing the rates of pneumonia and other complications, then better vaccine formulations and patient education will improve health outcomes. The burden of flu among the elderly is one that has not necessarily received much interest as influenza is seasonal. As influence is a reparatory diseases it mainly affects the pulmonary systems, and the elderly are susceptible to pneumonia, but vaccine reduces the risk of flu and complications.
Purpose of the change proposal
The proportion of the elderly in the western world will increase more rapidly, and while influenza infections occur all age groups, there is a need to increase vaccination as there is increased hospitalization in the this demographic group. There is a need for more effective vaccines, and the health practitioners ought to be advocates of change to improve health outcomes and patient safety. This is especially when dealing with the older people as there is immunosuppression among the elderly population. PICOT
For the aging patients, influenza vaccine application compared to no vaccination will reduce the possibility of pneumonia contraction during the flu season
