Peter is a 44-year old American who presented with obsessive gambling addiction. Peter conveyed accumulating gambling despite his willingness to get over it. By evaluating Peter's assertion, it is evident that he is not progressing as expected.
On the first meeting with Peter, he expressed his concern over his desire for gambling. Notably, as a counselor, Peter was introduced to behavior or what others call cognitive behavioral therapy. Typically, this therapy uses methodical exposure to the behavior that one would want to get rid of, and it also teaches the skill to reduce the urge for the practice (Fenn & Bryne, 2013). In this case, since the patient is addicted to gambling, this behavioral therapy was used to focus on irrational and negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. Besides, the approach is significant in managing negative emotions associated with the disorder, such as stress and anxiety. Subsequently, under normal circumstances, Peter was expected to show improvements.
