Nursing professional draws significantly from diverse models that influence practice and behavior in the healthcare context. Two influential nursing theories comprise Ray’s theory of bureaucratic caring and the human-to-human relationship theory by Travelbee. The two theories are more similar than they are different because the former advocates for moral reasoning and understanding of interrelated and complex systems to inform the appropriate actions for upholding processes that lead to desirable patient outcomes (Maykut, 2019). As a result, nurses use this theory to think holistically. The latter considers supporting the patients and their caregivers to overcome their illnesses through healthy relationships as the foundation of nursing (Parola et al., 2020). The main difference between the two models is that Ray’s work focuses on complex systems while Travelbee takes a simplistic approach to human-to-human interactions. Despite their variations, the two theories have remained influential in nursing practice.
