The Treatment of Stimulant Use Disorder
Introduction
Stimulant Use Disorder (SUD) is a type of substance use disorder that involve the non-medical use of stimulants. Under the DSM-5, it is defined as the continued use of stimulants that results in clinically significant distress or impairment that ranges from mild to severe. Key symptoms include elevated heart rate, breathing & heart rate, anxiety, and paranoia. The current brief explores effective medication for the problem, its working mechanism, and potential side effects experienced by patients with SUD.
Select one drug to treat the diagnosis(es) or symptoms.
Bupropion is among the most used medications in the treatment of SUD involving amphetamine-type substances. The medication is sold under the brand name Wellbutrin, and it is FDA approved for the treatment of  SUD cases involving these types of stimulants. List medication class and mechanism of action for the chosen medication.
Bupropion falls under the class of medications called antidepressants. These are types of medication that can relieve or treat major depressive disorders, anxiety, chronic pain conditions, and addiction management. Thus, the drug either treats or manages the symptoms of SUD effectively. Write the prescription in prescription format.
Bupropion comes in a tablet, either as a sustained-release or extended-release (long-acting drug) taken orally. The medication is taken three times a day with a time interval of up to 6 hours or four times a day with doses spread 4 hours apart. Different brand names come in different sizes of tables. For instance, Wellbutrin SR has 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg tablets, while Zyban tablet comes in 150 mg. For adults with SUD, the prescription is for sustained-release tablets: 150 mg/ day taken at least 8 hours apart.
Provide an evidence-based source and rationale for the selected medication using at least one scholarly Textbooks may be used for additional references but are not the primary reference.
Leading to its approval by the FDA, several studies have highlighted the efficacy of bupropion in treating methamphetamine (stimulant) use disorder. For instance, Trivedi et al. (2021) conducted a multisite, double-blind, two-stage controlled trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral extended-release bupropion in a...
