Introduction
The Code of Ethics for nurses establishes an ethical standard for the profession. The Code of Ethics also acts as a guide for nurses in decision-making and ethical analysis. Ideally, nurses' main responsibility is to prevent illnesses, eradicate suffering, and protect the health of families, communities, and individuals. Nurses are required to demonstrate ethical aptitude in the professional life.
The primacy of the Patient's Interests
Nurses' ethics and values are supposed to be affirmed by organizational and professional relationships (Butts, 2016). The main commitment of nurses is to provide health care services to recipients. These recipients include families, groups, or communities. Any care plan a nurse should develop should reflect the commitment of nursing to patients' dignity and worth. Nurses need to note that good nursing provides patients with the opportunity of implementing and planning care and support that is acceptable to them. In this case, nurses should concentrate on addressing the interests of patients. For example, before administering any medication, they should consult family members. When patients' interests are in conflict with those of family members, they should find ways of resolving them. Even when the conflicts might persist, the nurse's commitment should remain to the patient.
This tenet is fundamental in the health care setting. When treating patients, nursing should always address patients' needs and interests.
