The employment of payment systems in enhancing quality of care and lowering healthcare costs, such as pay for performance, is in line with the IOMs Future of Nursing Report and the Afordace Care Act (ACA) recommendations (Campaign for Action, 2016). This addresses the challenges of nursing education and nursing practice and education, quality of health care, access to care, disease prevention, and local and state innovations (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2018). The system has gained traction among payers and policy-makers, although the pay-for-perfomance system is only emerging because the role of nurses has always been invisible to the traditional payment systems.
The “Future of Nursing Report” explores how the roles and education of nursing professionals should take a paradigm shift to meet the increased need for care, which will be reformed and improved in the U.S. complex healthcare system (Institute of Medicine, 2011).
