The healthcare sector offers nurse practitioners a wide range of opportunities as they pursue their personal and career development goals. Nurse practitioners can work in different healthcare fields or specialties while delivering quality care to equally diverse patient populations. Achieving the desired outcome for one’s professional and personal development goals as a nurse practitioner demands the development of a strategic career plan. Provided herein is my strategic career plan as a new nurse practitioner outlining my career vision, professional development guideline, and application of acquired knowledge and skills towards impacting my profession.
Career Vision
My career vision as a new nurse practitioner is to establish and run my private practice as a family nurse practitioner for maximum utilization of acquired knowledge, skills, and potential towards delivering quality health care services to my patients. Among my short-term goals as a new nurse practitioner is getting employed in an established healthcare facility as a nurse practitioner. I plan to work in that capacity for five years, using the opportunity as an excellent platform for applying my acquired knowledge and skills. I expect an annual salary of approximately $100,000 with an annual one-month paid leave while working at the health care facility. I will also use the opportunity to gain the experience necessary for setting up my private practice as a family nurse practitioner. Other short-term goals include attending seminars, conferences, and webinars for family nurse practitioners to gain more knowledge on the qualifications and other demands for the practice and finding a mentor in the same. Long-term goals include joining the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for continuous support in my personal and professional development path as a family nurse practitioner. Another long-term goal is continuing education as a nurse practitioner and acquiring a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certification (FNP-BC) during my five-year tenure as a nurse practitioner with the well-established health care facility. After the first five years of working as a nurse practitioner specializing in family care in a health institution, I will start venturing into my private practice as a family nurse practitioner in my ultimate long-term plan.
Ideal Work Situation
Family nurse practitioners serve in almost similar ways to family doctors, thus requiring a wide range of experience working and dealing with different patient care needs. An ideal work situation as I prepare for my private practice as an FNP is a primary care setting in an urban center to get the experience required to address patients’ different health care needs in the family context.
