Breast cancer is a serious concern across the world and the various treatments have significant impacts on the survivors. The available treatments can be devastating and sometimes trigger a number of adverse reactions for most breast cancer survivors. Most women can develop various symptoms of psychological stress such as pain, sexuality concerns, depression, and anxiety among others. In order to address these issues, most women adopt various strategies to cope with the impacts in order to redefine themselves as well as their lives. Some of the strategies adopted by most women include positive physical exercise, wishful thinking, cognitive restructuring, yoga and religious practices. Loss of femininity in women can result in low self-esteem, social isolation, negative body image and development of relationship problems. Moreover, some women may develop “cancer stigma” due to the effects of the cancer treatments.
Solution
Considering the psychobehavioral and psychophysiological nature of the effects of cancer treatments, a mind-body intervention is needed. Due to the nature of psychobehavioral and psychophysiological effects cancer treatment, a mind-body intervention is required and guided imagery becomes the best option because of its benefits.
Guided imagery which is also known as visualization is a healing technique where an individual imagines sounds, pictures, smells, as well as other sensations with the objective of attaining a certain goal. Imagining being in a particular environment is likely to activate certain senses which can produce a psychological or physical effect. Therefore, guided imagery is considered as a mental function which can express itself as a psychophysiological process with the abilities of engaging all senses to stimulate various changes such as perception, physiologic or behavioural processes.
