Skeletal System and Forensic Anthropology in the Identification of Deceased Persons

Essay Instructions:

YOU MUST WATCH THE VIDEOS ATTACHED!
In this Case Assignment, you will visit various sites to learn about skeletal anatomy and function. Studying forensic anthropology can tell you many facts about the deceased based on the appearance of his or her bones. You will then apply your knowledge about the skeletal system to describe how forensic anthropology is used in the identification of deceased persons.
Case Assignment
Prepare a 2- to 3-page paper in which you address the following questions:
Read the article and watch the video on Bone Biographies at the following site:
Written in Bone: Forensic Files of the 17th Century Chesapeake. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Retrieved April 16, 2018, from https://anthropology(dot)si(dot)edu/writteninbone/index.html
What is the last bone to complete its growth?
How are teeth used to estimate age?
What is bone "remodeling" and how can it be used to determine age?
What is the sciatic notch? How can it be used to determine gender?
At the link below you will read information about different structures of the skeletal system along with an example case file of a deceased person:
Learning from Skeletons. Retrieved April 16, 2018, from http://www(dot)pbs(dot)org/opb/historydetectives/techniques/forensic_feature.html
How can the skull be used to determine age?
How is the pelvis of a female different from the pelvis of a male?
What can the hand bones tell you about the deceased?
Select one case file from the website above (see the menu bar on the right, examples include Mystery Moran, My Indiana Home). The case file must discuss a topic related to the anatomy or function of the skeletal system. Describe the case and the key evidence used to solve it.
Assignment Expectations
Organize this essay assignment using subtitles that summarize the topic from each question above. For example, to answer Question 1, use a descriptive subtitle like the following: Bone Growth. Answer each question under the subtitle using complete sentences that relate back to the question.
Your essay should be approximately 2-3 pages. Use APA formatting for your essay. Pages should have 1-inch margins, and text should be in 12-point type and double-spaced. Include a title page, an introduction, subtitles with answers to the questions, and a concluding paragraph. Remember to include in-text citations within the body of the essay referencing your resources (e.g., Murray, 2014). Also, be sure to include a reference section at the end of your assignment listing all the resources you used to complete your essay, such as required readings and any additional resources.
See the Trident guide to APA Style, 7th edition.
Direct quotes should be limited and must be designated by quotation marks. Paraphrased ideas must give credit to the original author, for example (Murray, 2014). Direct copying from “homework help” websites will not receive credit. Once you have completed your assignment within a Word document, please upload your final version to the Case 2 Dropbox. Please also note your Turnitin originality score and make revisions as needed. Please contact your instructor with any questions.

Anthropology entails the study of humans and societies of the present and past. The bones of a dead person can reveal more information about an individual. Hands, bones, and teeth can be analyzed to know the age of the deceased. Forensic anthropologists can extract vital information, such as an individual’s age or gender, by analyzing their bones, teeth, and wrist.
Last Bone to Grow
The last bone in a human body to complete its growth is the clavicle or collar bone. The bone completes its growth at 25 years (National Museum of Natural History, n.d.). Scientists can measure the bone length to determine children’s age, and this technique is only applicable when the bone has stopped growing.
How Teeth can be Used to Estimate Age
Specifically, a tooth’s crown develops first, and the root follows. As such, scientists can estimate the age of an individual using teeth. They compare the tooth formation stages using an X-ray and the bone with known standards of dental growth. In particular, X-rays give views of the tooth part with unerupted permanent part.
Bone Remodeling and How it can be Used to Determine Age
Bone remodeling is the removal of the mineralized bone by an osteoclast, which is followed by bone matrix formation via osteoblasts that become mineralized subsequently. Even when growth in childhood stops, bone remodeling continues. Throughout an individual’s life, bone makes new osteons or minute tubes that contain blood vessels (National Museum of Natural History, n.d.). In that light, bone remodeling can be used to determine the age of a person. Young people have larger and fewer osteons, while older adults have more and small osteon fragments since the new ones grow and disrupt the older ones.
Sciatic Notch and How Sciatic Notch Determine Gender
A sciatic notch is the pelvis part. Indeed, it can be used to determine gender. A sciatic notch of the male is u-shaped and narrow. On the contrary, a female’s sciatic n...
