The profession of a school nurse is considered a specialized practice that focuses on maintaining the overall well-being of students both academically and physically. To ensure that the professional integrity of this noble vocation is maintained it is a must that the school nurse endeavors to keep the student healthy and safe. And as the number of school going children tops 50 million in both public and secondary institutions, the school nurse is well-positioned to promote healthy living and satisfy the healthcare requirements of the students (National Center for Education Statistics, 2017).
The school nurse can plan to promote their professional image by being involved in the initiation and progression of policies and procedures that govern the health practice in schools at both the individual and district level. Moreover, they should increase their reliance on student-centered evidence and many years of performance information and practice to determine level of healthcare (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2009). The school nurse must integrate ethical guidelines into their practice and ensure that they deliver care that meets all standards of dignity, privacy, diversity and student autonomy. This, in the long-run, will ensure their professional image grows among fellow professionals and the students (National Association of School Nurses, 2016).
