“There are two types of systems in organizations: closed systems and open systems. An open system interacts with its environment through giving and receiving information. Closed systems are closed off from the outside environment, and all interaction and knowledge is transmitted within the closed system only. Closed systems can hamper growth since the flow of information stays within the system and has no chance to interact with or build on knowledge from the outer environment

Introduction
Every organization faces different issues, especially when it comes to providing the best possible services to its customers. Healthcare facilities are no different in this regard. There are several departments in healthcare, which serves different purposes for the patients. The focal point of this study is on the medical-surgical unit of one of the reputed hospitals in the area. The study discussed how the said unit is facing some issues. However, one major issue that stands out most is the scarcity of medical equipment and the staff. This is something that needs prompt attention. The study is going to be based on an open system approach.
Discussion
Medical Surgical Unit
The medical-surgical unit provides generalized medical care to patients who are suffering from a variety of different acute diseases. The unit is responsible for providing rehabilitative and acute nursing care services to a vast range of patients ranging from pediatric to geriatrics (Amsn, 2019). The services of rehabilitation involve caring for the wound and post-surgical recovery etc.
Shortage of staff in this unit is a significant threat to the overall quality of care of the patient (Amsn, 2019). This could ultimately affect the prognosis of the patients as the proper and individual attention would be compromised. Similarly, the lack of medical facilities and equipment in this unit is also very detrimental as it would ultimately lead to compromise.
Identified Problem
Several issues could be pointed out in the said unit which is normal as perfection is a rare thing. However, one identified issue is very detrimental for not only the patients of the unit but also for the staff working there. The issue is insufficient for staff members and medical equipment. This is something that needs quick attention as due to the scarcity of staff and equipment; the overall organizational system of the unit is falling apart.
Input
The elements of system theory could help understand the structure and processes of healthcare. There are several inputs of healthcare that greatly impacts the overall organizational structure (Meyer & O’BrienPallas, 2010). In the chosen healthcare facility for this study, some important elements were discovered to be not up to the par.
One of the things that are very important in healthcare facilities is the quality of care. In this study, this crucial element could be seen as being compromised. The lack of staff compelled the staff members to provide insufficient time and care to their patients. However, the staff is not to blame for this unfortunate situation, they are trying to do what they could in the given time, but if the inventory is not sufficient, then they are helpless. The second major issue is the scarcity of medical equipment. All of this is affecting the prognosis of the patient. The input that is considered for this study is the higher management, the staff, and the medical resources.
