Essay Instructions:

Researchers have used natural methods such as remediation (bacteria and other natural organisms) to clean up oil spills for many years. Other methods are continually being developed and tested for their effectiveness. How do prokaryotic organisms (like bacteria) differ from eukaryotic organisms (like fungi) in their ability to clean up crude oil in marine environments?

Next, use complete sentences in paragraph format to address the question below in reference to the Biello article:

What were some of the challenges these scientists faced when figuring out how microbes could clean up the Horizon Oil Spill, and whether these microbes would be capable of restoring the natural balance afterwards?

Microbes naturally devour the dead and decompose waste materials that litter the surface of the Earth. They are excellent in so doing that the human population has gained a keen interest towards their coercive use to make the environment safe and habitable. Bioremediation is the concept within which the system works. Bioremediation can be defined as the use of organisms that naturally eat contaminants or those who have been genetically modified to eat the toxins from the environment. Scientists and researchers design and release microbes to contaminated sites such like oil, PCBs gasoline, and even mercury. In Trondheim, the researchers have exploited the ability of nature to clean up itself. And the achievements are surprising.
How Prokaryotic Organisms and Eukaryotic Organisms Clean Oil Spills and their Differences in this Function
Naturally, the world is plentiful of a host of organisms which together work to decompose oil. And there is no single microbe, regardless of how genetically modified it is, that has proved to supersede the natural defense. Throughout the environment, there are oil-degrading bacteria and similarly, petroleum contains several complex compounds. Fortunately, the organisms that eat the compounds are equally complex in nature. Superbugs fail since they compete with the community which is adapted to the environment. Microbes, like teenagers, are hard to control. The concept of “nature will eat it up” is inaccurate on the scales of time. In bioremediation, the use f prokaryotes are one of the most interesting and useful ways of cleaning up oil spills. Oil spills such as the Prestige oil spill in Spain, the Lebanon power plant spill into the Mediterranean Sea and the most recent in Gulf, Mexico, the BP oil spill demonstrate the importance of prokaryotes in bioremediation (Crisafi, et.al., 2016). To clean these spills, inorganic nutrients are added into the spills. The nutrients help the bacteria to grow. The hydrocarbon-degrading ...
