The shortage of nurses in the healthcare system is one of the teething problems that have existed for a long. The shortage of nursing care has far-reaching implications on healthcare delivery to patients. Nurses form a critical part of healthcare and constitute the largest portion of the healthcare workforce. For effective delivery of care for the whole population, groups, communities, and individuals, skilled nurses are needed, but the inadequacy of well-prepared and educated nurses continue to pose problems. Nurses are in high demand to educate and care for increasing populations of communities, patients, and hospitalized with diverse chronic conditions such as arthritis, dementia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The nursing shortage is speculated to be severe in the future as the conventionally implemented approaches to addressing the nursing shortage have sub-optimally worked. Leadership is well-positioned to play a critical role in managing the shortage of nurses in the healthcare system.
