In the study by Allory et al. 2020, the researchers identified the facilitators and barriers to patient participation in diabetes self-management education (DSME) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in France. Schwennesen, Henriksen & Willaing (2015) also focused on patient nonattendance of DSME programs, but they did not identify the facilitators. The responders were from a low-income area primary care providers catered to the patients. The researchers used semi-structured and in-depth interviews in 2017 to identify themes on program participation, facilitators, and barriers to DSME participation. On the other hand, Schwennesen, Henriksen & Willaing (2015) used semi-structured interviews to identify themes on nonattendance of self-management education, with the themes placed under the individual and organizational factors.
