Every second, the world produces massive amounts of data. When put to good use, this data could help the world combat some of its most thorny problems. For example, great strides can be made in the healthcare sector, especially on the preventive front, if this data could be put to good use. Currently, the healthcare sector produces a lot of data. Pastorino et al. (2019) note that in 2011 alone, the U.S. healthcare system managed to store data totaling 150 exabytes. These volumes of data could go to waste if mechanisms are not put in place to help derive advantages from such collections. However, in as much as benefits could be derived from such massive amounts of data, there are some risks involved. Provided herein is an analysis of the rewards and risks associated with big data in the healthcare sector.
Rewards
One of the rewards of big data is that it facilitates collecting patient data from multiple sources and devices. There are currently many technological devices, especially wearables, used to collect patient data every day. These devices could be connected to a patient's phone or a hospital's system, where data mining could be happening. Upon collection, this data could be analyzed and used to inform patient behaviors to reduce health risks to patients. Healthcare professionals could use this data to direct patients on proper behaviors that could, in turn, reduce their exposure to diseases.
Big data can also help the healthcare sector to fast-track precision medicine. Precision medicine is a patient-centered approach to care that utilizes patients' genetic understanding or knowledge to help doctors offer care and treatment with the highest probability to help patients.
