Understanding the relationship between stress and our environment is essential for anyone. It allows us to have a better approach to managing difficult situations and help others do the same. Accordingly, the discussion that we had in class has taught me that stress is a combination of internal and external factors. Additionally, stress can either be negative or positive, contrary to our misconception that every kind of stress is dangerous to our lives. I want to reflect on some critical learnings about stress in this article.
Stress as a Complex Situation
Our previous discussions have taught us that stress is a combination of internal and external factors. Mainly speaking, stress is an internal response of our body to external stressors.
On the one hand, this tells us about external stressors in our lives. We all know this since we always have to meet deadlines, engage in awkward conversation, or even have a bout against another individual. These stressors characterize what it means to be human, and the only way that we can succeed is to either fight or flight from them.
On the other hand, we mainly experience stress because of our internal response to it. Our body generates a series of activities known as the “generalized alarm response,” which activates several physiological responses like the hypothalamus and the adrenal glands, which release the ACTH and adrenalin, respectively.
