The experience of Kalisch is not unusual. Research conducted on missed care in the hospital setting shows that such incidences are frequent but vary in their degree. Researchers have studied the different aspects of missing care. Griffiths et al. (2018) conducted a systematic review on nursing articles to identify nursing care most frequently missed on acute adult care and determined that low nursing staffing was associated with higher levels of missed care. Also, the comments in both part one and two of the article, mostly by other nurses, show that missed care is a common occurrence in hospitals. For example, in the comment “No Time for Bedside Nursing” the respondent says that the Kalisch's experience is not unique and adds that patient care “has been replaced with electronic medical charting and limited resources” (Kalisch, 2010). The respondent works in an emergency department and notices that pericare and bed baths have been neglected.
The thing I find most disturbing in Kalisch’s description of a healthcare moment is delayed transfer and the nurses’ lack of attention when she was experiencing intense pain (First impressions and On the unit) ( Kalisch, 2010). In her 2 ½ hours wait for a room to available, Kalisch says that her only contact with the staff was when her friend as for a basin. In all that time, the nurses were laughing and talking at the desk. Things got worse when she was moved to a room. Her morphine wore off, and the pain was back.
