Introduction
The IOM report presented numerous recommendations that broaden the scope of nursing practice. The recommendation advance nursing by encouraging nurses to attain advance education and sharpening the skills required to deal with the changing healthcare system. Although there is a shortage of nurses, these recommendations have made the nursing industry to be competitive. Education is not just perceived as a competitive element, but also as something that enables nurses to occupy higher positions and take part in the reorganization of health services. This paper aims to examine the importance of nursing education.
Options in the market with an undergraduate degree in nursing
Nursing is a competitive profession yet there is a sharp shortage of nurses across the United States. As a nurse with an undergraduate degree, I have the skills to synchronize patient services and offer emotional assistance to patients and their loved ones. Therefore, I can secure employment in healthcare facilities, physician’s office, nursing care facilities, and outpatient clinics and schools. From 2012 to 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that other professional will grow by 11% while nursing will grow by 19%. The bureau also predicted that over half a million nursing jobs will be added but they will only be available to people who hold at least an associate degree and have passed their licensing exams (Chi, 2020). Therefore, I hope I will secure employment as soon as I complete my studies in nursing.
Review of IOM the Future of Nursing
The Future of Nursing indicates that changes in nursing education should match the numerous reforms undertaken in healthcare. Although the objectives of nursing learning should remain the same, learning institutions must equip nurses with skills that help them to function as leaders while also meeting the needs of patients. However, for nurses to successfully collaborate with professionals in other fields, they must attain a higher level of education before starting their careers and throughout their carries.
In my case, after completing my undergraduate degree, I will pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). DNP will allow me to take on advanced nursing roles or practice as an APRN specialty in family health, mental health etc. My main reason for pursuing DNP is that in 2004, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) changed the educational requirement of becoming an APRN from MSN to DNP. Although these changes have not taken place, they will take place sooner or later. I will pursue DNP on a part-time basis which takes 4 to 6 years to complete. Therefore, I will enroll in a DNP program in 2022 and complete it in 2027 and then sit for APRN license exams in 2028.
Increase in the level of education and job market and role in the future of nursing
Increase in the level of education makes an individual more competitive while also exposes him/her to higher salaries. Entry-level employment opportunities that pay well are difficult to locate, even for fresh graduates (Bonie et al., 2015). The same paradigm applies to nurses where those with advanced education have more employment opportunities....
