Rates of Depression and Anxiety in Children
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an increase in psychopathologies. Illnesses like depression and anxiety became rampant among the youth and children, and many suicide cases have been reported are of the youth in the last three years. Depression went to 25.5%, while anxiety rates doubled to 20.5% (Racine et al., 2021). These illnesses became rampant due to the disruption of day-to-day life and social isolation, as socializing is important among the young generation. Most social areas were closed for months, like malls, schools, churches, and playgrounds. Most young people felt as if the lockdowns stalled their lives; also, the problems at their homes were more amplified, issues like a violent parent, a drug-abusing parent, poor financial status at home, and parental wrangles (Racine et al., 2021). Since there was reduced contact with the cushioning support of teachers, mentors, and peers, they started getting anxiety and depression. It was noted to be more prevalent among older adolescents ages and girls.
To address the issue of psychopathology among children, several resources are required. First, awareness should be created among the youth and their caretakers. This would help identify their children's or friends' symptoms and awareness of the available solutions (Pfeffer Baum & North, 2020). Providing proper information about predictable reactions to this kind of stress and assuring people and youngsters that the predicament is manageable and that people have coped and are coping in times of dire crisis would normalize their encounters with the changes brought about by the pandemic. According to Pfeffer Baum and North (2020), healthcare providers should offer different suggestions for coping mechanisms and management of stress. These may include maintaining routines and structuring activities. They should link children to mental and social health services and counsel them for professional assistance.
Secondly, creating monitored online peer groups could be beneficial as they offer social support to the children and offers a feeling of socialization and connection with their friends. Local communities are resourceful in controlling family matters. Parents in the community can liaise to aqueduct children's needs and school requirements, promote healthy lifestyles in children and promote online studies so that the kids stagnate academically. Psychologists can provide online consultation services to help manage mental health issues caused by domestic disputes, strained relationships with parents, and infection anxiety. According to Leung et al. (2020), Social workers can help parents, especially disadvantaged families, cope with family issues arising from the situation.
