Background
Purposeful hourly rounding is proposed as a quality improvement proposal with intentional, proactive, and regular checks on patients during hospitalization. Improving a patient’s care experience requires a good understanding of a patient’s health care needs in an environment where certainty and interventions assist the patient. The nurses’ availability is essential to respond to patients’ needs, and purposeful hourly rounding is proposed as the quality improvement initiative.
Problem or Issue in Practice or Organization
There has been rounding, but rounding has not been implemented anticipating patients’ needs. Purposeful hourly rounding is proposed to improve patient outcomes, the quality of care, patient satisfaction, patient safety, and nurse satisfaction. Hourly rounding has been proposed and implemented in various health care institutions, but considering purposeful hourly intervention is a more recent phenomenon. Some of the outcomes considered in implementing purposeful hourly rounding prevent falls and adverse health outcomes while fewer nurse interruptions occur.
Significance of Quality Improvement
Purposeful hourly rounding is intentional rounding that improves comfort and addresses each patient’s needs. Hourly rounding practices mostly focused on the 5 Ps, Position (comfort), Potty Possessions (needs), Personal Needs (personal hygiene), and Pain (Ram, John & John, 2019). The five Ps combined with the plan of care required asking patients questions on every patient. Still, there is a greater focus on rounding documentation and considering each patient’s circumstances, such as whether they are asleep and at risk of fall (Daniels, 2016). Thus aligning the operating procedures with purposeful hourly rounding is helpful. In the quality improvement project, there is an emphasis on improving the environment for both the patients and the nurses.
The healthcare team has a better understanding of the purposeful hourly rounding policies and practices, and the nurses are empowered to make decisions and use their judgment to improve the quality of care. Purposeful hourly rounding is incorporated in quality improvement projects to improve patient satisfaction where best practices are incorporated, and the nurse leaders support changes. Improving the quality of care is necessary to promote patient safety and satisfaction while also reducing the risk of patients getting complications and adverse outcomes.
Demonstration of Support From Previous Research
Nursing responsiveness tends to influence patient satisfaction during hospitalization as patients are more likely to get help when they want it. Purposeful hourly rounding is a proactive approach that necessitates regular checks of the hospitalized patients (Daniels, 2016). The overall wellbeing of the patients, including reducing the risk of hospital-acquired infections is prioritized as there is structured and regular checking of the patients. Interventions are individualized in purposeful hourly rounding, and the nursing rounds are timely, which is necessary to attend to patient needs care. Rounding also enhances n...
