Quality Improvement Initiative
Introduction
The delivery of quality health care services makes for one of the primary objectives for both the healthcare systems and facilities in the United States and around the world. However, the rising cost of healthcare and increasingly complex demands among consumers or patients for quality care services pose a challenge against the achievement of the delivery of quality care. The increasing rate of chronic illnesses among the ageing population in the United States and other countries around the world further challenges the ability of healthcare facilities to provide quality care services to patients across the socio-economic divide. The achievement of the said objective is dependent on the ability of health care systems or organizations to provide quality and safe health care services when addressing the wide range of healthcare services. Among the safety concerns that pose a challenge towards the delivery of quality health care is the occurrence of medication incidents. The occurrence of medication errors during the process of delivering medication through transcription, prescription, and administration of medicines compromise patients’ safety while also increasing the cost of health care. Medication errors are one of the primary factors contributing to hospital-acquired complications, which lead to increased costs of care through prolonged patient stays in hospitals and care facilities. Medication incidents are also on the rise within the healthcare facility and as a nursing practitioner and the front line in the delivery of medication care to patients, it is important to implement effective interventional measures towards enhancing medication safety. Provide herein is a proposal for the implementation of nursing education as a quality improvement initiative for the delivery of quality patient care at the facility.
Purpose of the Quality Improvement Initiative

The initiative enhances the competencies of nurses in the administration of medication during the process of delivering medicines to patients. Among the medication errors committed by nurses include the administration of the wrong dosage, use of wrong routes for delivering medication, wrong dosage to patients, delivering the appropriate medicine to the wrong patient as well as failure to observe the correct timing for the medication CITATION Pat19 \l 1033 (Patient Safety Network, 2019). Other medication administration errors committed by nurses include failure to document the patients’ medication history or information on the same CITATION Pat19 \l 1033 (Patient Safety Network, 2019). The quality improvement initiative thus functions to enhance the nursing care providers’ competencies in the administration of medication across the outlined parameters.
