As the medical field continues experiencing change, new ideas are being embraced as old ones are essentially being discarded after weighing up their relevance in current practice and the medical environment. The gatekeeping system involves a patient meeting up with a general practitioner (GP) or a primary care physician for their medical issues (Brown, 2017). Through these two individuals, further measures can be taken, especially if it means referring these patients to more specialized care. The intended purpose of the gatekeeping system was to cut down on medical expenditure, lower healthcare use in general and streamline healthcare delivery at the local level.
