COPD may be confused with heart failure (American College of Physicians , 2011). Hence, clinicians ought to be careful when diagnosing.  COPD is a leading cause of death. In the United States, almost 5% of the adult population suffers from COPD. The disease is costly to manage for patients as well as expensive for government budgeting. Addressing causes, diagnosis, and management of COPD are a government’s priority. Several prevention strategies in response to leading causes have been documented and others implemented. This report reiterates on diagnosis, management, and prevention strategies. The study focuses on a patient case study. Treatment and management approaches tailored to the provided case study are reflected in this discussion. COPD Guidelines There are many COPD guidelines available for clinicians within and outside the United States. The American College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians, American Thorax Society, and the European Respiratory Society are some of the institutions that have documents on COPD guidelines. Existing COPD guidelines address issues ranging from screening to the treatment of COPD. This discussion is based on COPD guidelines that address diagnosis, management, and prevention of COPD. It is worth to note that consistency and minor differences resulting from new knowledge and difference in perspective are observable with COPD guidelines. COPD Diagnosis Diagnosis of COPD is critical. Differential diseases like asthma tend to be confused for COPD, notes Vestbo et al.(2013). For right treatment and management, clinicians ought to perform COPD diagnosis in line with COPD guidelines (American College of Physicians , 2011).
