I was given permission to talk to the elderly people in the senior living community, who were above the age of 65, but each one was able to communicate coherently. Even for those with dementia they were able to recognize the presence of strangers who were accompanied by the caregivers. Talking to those around them helps to get more information on the health status of the elderly. The elderly supported independent living and assisted living, given that their health status required caregivers to offer support.2. What were the persons doing during your visit?
The activities were done together or individually, and during the visit the elderly female participants were doing light physical exercises, and even for those who had mobility problems, they were somewhat active, unless they were under strict instructions to have bed rest. There were differences on the ability of the elderly to rely on self-care practices, but they would help others. The men were more hands on making both graduation cards and post cards. Those with dementia were involved in moderate walking or making photos.3. How much were you able to talk to the elderly, and what did they say? How did they describe themselves? Were they able to talk cogently? The elderly were not compelled to talk, and in most cases they appreciated the support of family, friends and staff. Social support was a concern given the need, and they described themselves based on their families, their past life, but mostly the present and how they were coping.
