How to Classify Public Jurisdiction as Rural

The best criterion for defining “rurality” is the absolute population within a particular public jurisdiction. In other words, a rural area has an absolute low population density. In particular, urbanized areas are those with 50,000 people or above, while urban clusters have at least 2,500 and at most 50,000 residents (Magnuson & Fu, 2013). When it comes to my hometown, Lagos, Nigeria, it is an urban area. Notably, Lagos is among the largest cities in Africa, with a population of about 20 million people. I have classified Lagos as an urban area due to its high population density. In particular, using a simple measure to classify a region is better than using a complex strategy. First, one does not take more time and resources to identify whether a specific area is urban or rural. Second, it facilitates the faster and proper allocation of public resources to promote people’s lives. Consequently, simple and accurate measures are the best to use instead of wasting time using complicated methods.
