Some psychosocial factors that affect healthcare professionals include work-related stress, poor work-life balance, and job dissatisfaction (Kumar et al., 2018). These factors are associated with high burnout among healthcare workers. They affect patient education because they limit healthcare professionals’ ability to assess and meet the health literacy needs of patients.
Some psychosocial factors that affect patients include social support and network, hopelessness, and stress (Thomas et al., 2020). When patients lack adequate support from family and friends and are hopeless and stressed, they might not appreciate the importance of patient education. These factors hinder patients’ readiness to learn.
Personality style refers to the characteristics and preferences of an individual and how they perceive and interpret the world (Peck & Pelley, 2017). One approach that could help the patient is to match the communication style to the patient’s personality style or type. For instance, an extroverted patient would benefit more from animated and action-oriented communication than an introvert (Peck & Pelley, 2017). Assessing a patient’s self-perception can also help understand the patient’s characteristics and attitudes.
