Sustainability is the degree to which an evidence-based intervention could meet the project objectives and thus generate benefits for extended timescales way after the termination of external support (Hailemariam et al., 2019). An intervention’s sustainability derives from its capacity to keep developing health care benefits over time. Walugembe and colleagues (2019) study indicated that the United States Agency for International Development defined an intervention’s sustainability as its ability to maintain project services at certain thresholds to ensure ongoing prevention and treatment for the medical problem even after essential financial, technical, and managerial support from an outside donor is terminated. In addition, sustainable interventions activities and components continue to be beneficial towards realizing the desirable project and target population outcomes (Walugembe et al., 2019). In this vein, it can be derived that sustainable interventions are characterized by a continuation of health care benefits to the target population and communities after project funding is terminated, the continuation of project activities within organizations, and cultivating communities’ ability to design and deliver projects to enhance behavioral changes and thus health outcomes.
Developing a conceptual framework is a practical strategy to promote the sustainability of an evidence-based intervention. The conceptual framework would be developed based on concept analysis and an extensive review of the literature. In this context, intervention sustainability would be defined as the process that derives from and succeeds intervention implementation, in which improvements are continued, innovative practice domains become routine. Immediate systems change support (Lennox, Maher, & Reed, 2018). The conceptual framework of the evidence-based project includes two key components: sustainability attributes and preconditions (factors) that impact sustainability. The impact of the interactions between the characteristics of and configuration of preconditions determines an intervention’s sustainability level.
