Developing professional goals is critical to guiding your career and transitioning to become a practicing NP. The goals that you develop should be SMART. SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-specific (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Resources, n.d.). Keeping your goals SMART will increase your chances of meeting or exceeding your professional career goals.

Consider professional goals that you might select to help focus on your transition from RN to NP practice.
For this Assignment, write a paper that is no more than 2 pages long that addresses the following:
Identify at least three short-term goals (1-2 years)-pass National Certification Exam, Find Nurse Practitioner job in Oncology, Master assessment skills
Identify at least three long-term goals (3-5 years)-master certain procedures such as lumbar punctures/spinal taps, utilize research and evidence to assist in the development and validation of nursing science, engage in lifelong learning, and the professional development of self and others.

Passing the National Certification Exam will be a substantial starting point in my career because an individual cannot become a nursing practitioner without having passed that exam. The goal is in accordance with the SMART goals because it's specific about passing the exam. It is also a goal that can be attained through hard work in the classroom. In addition, the goal is relevant in the field of nursing because it will determine whether I have gained the necessary skills that are required to become a nursing practitioner. The exam is scheduled at a specific date hence making the goal a timely one. The goal will be achieved through hard work.
