Over the years, medical tourism has been gaining popularity across the world. Many people are traveling from their native country to other countries in search of medical treatment leading to its increased popularity. Unfortunately, this process has various advantages and disadvantages, causing controversy. I am against medical tourism because of the negative impact it contributes. One problem with medical tourism is the poor or no treatment follow-ups. In most cases, patients only spend a few days in the hospital and then return to their native nation. The patient can come with problems associated with the surgery or side effects of drugs (Al-Lamki, 2011). The surgeon is responsible for looking at the patient's progress, which may be difficult since the patient and caregiver are far away. Therefore, the patients are at risk of experiencing deteriorated well-being if they encounter side effects of the drugs.
Moreover, medical tourism increases the health care costs in the host nation. In India, there are several cases where local citizens do not have labor rooms, leading to massive hospital overcrowding (Al-Lamki, 2011). Patients from other countries may vacate some of the spaces the local patients should occupy.
