Due to the significant physiological differences between women and men, the impact of alcohol and other drugs on their bodies varies. Research on the treatment of alcohol and other drugs is based on men. In that light, the paper discusses two primary considerations that should be implemented when treating women.
First, women should be encouraged to avoid drinking alcohol or other drugs when pregnant. Most opioids, such as morphine and heroin, cross the placental barrier quickly.
