The belief that pharmacological treatment used for psychiatric conditions are teratogenic may be a barrier to perinatal mental healthcare for miseducated client (Clinic Barcelona, 2022).
The belief that depression during the perinatal period is only post-partum may be a barrier to perinatal healthcare. (Clinic Barcelona, 2022).
Identify at least two specific education strategies or resources the PMHNP can provide to clients and families to address these barriers.
The PMHNP can provide the client with a drug fact sheet from the food and drug administration (FDA) or a medication fact sheet from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The PMHNP can provide literature and educated the patient over the signs and symptoms of depression. The patient should be educated that depression can occur at any point throughout the lifespan regardless of pregnancy status.
Identify one policy at either the federal, state, or local level that impacts mental health services for children and adolescents or clients in the perinatal period. Explain whether the policy supports or inhibits services.
March of 2021 the federal government introduced the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. This plan supports perinatal healthcare by extending Medicaid postpartum coverage by up to 12 months. The act will aid to address barriers of health inequities due to race and income status (Morain et al, 2022).
Describe at least two advocacy strategies the PMHNP can use to advance mental health services for children and adolescents or clients in the perinatal period. Identify other professionals the PMHNP can collaborate with to bring about change.
The PMHNP could collaborate with primary care providers to offer comprehensive screening for mental health wellness throughout the perinatal period.
The PMHNP may produce pamphlets and other mental health literature to educate women on mental health disorders throughout pregnancy. The pamphlets may be placed in areas such as the department of health and women’s health clinics.
