Respiratory illnesses constitute the bulk of pediatric cases. During my pediatric clinical rotation, I noted that respiratory tract infections are the leading cause of childhood hospitalization and outpatient clinic visits. Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) lead to the most prevalent reasons for pediatric hospitalization and associated readmission (Nakamura et al., 2017). Thus, respiratory illness among children underpins mortality and morbidity, especially those who are under-five years.
One of the respiratory conditions that I witnessed included asthma. The management of an asthmatic child was not an easy task given the need for urgent medical attention to enhance breathing and oxygenation as well as claiming the worried parents. The 7-year old boy reported to the pediatric clinic with wheezing, labored breathing, and chest tightness after being ex[posed to pollen. We immediately put him on Pulmicort Flexhaler and Albuterol, which relived symptoms. We advise the parents to keep track of the child’s action plan through careful observation of symptoms and making use of medication whenever there is a worsening of symptoms.
