P – The population consists of patients with mental illness
I – The intervention is education on physical activity
C – The comparator is patients with mental illness without education on physical activity
O – The expected outcome is better physical health
T – The time for the project is over six months
PICOT Problem
Mental health problems have a two-way association with obesity. Conditions like depression lead to weight gain. For instance, mentally ill patients are depressed, food can easily become a coping strategy. Such patients are more likely to consume unhealthy foods (Abbasalizad Farhangi, Dehghan & Jahangiry, 2018). At the same time, weight gain can be a secondary manifestation of a mental disorder and a side effect of medication. Individuals with severe mental health problems are more prone to risks associated with obesity compared to the rest of the general population (Smith, Fu & Kobayashi, 2020).
As a result, it is vital to identify a solution that can address the problem of weight gain among mentally ill patients. The PICOT problem is meant to bring an evidence-based solution to the problem of weight gain due to a lack of physical activity among mentally ill individuals. The nursing intervention is meant to provide a non-pharmacological intervention that improves weight management and associated lifestyle behaviours for individuals with mental illness. Patient care will be done for individuals residing in mental health secure units. This will be critical since the patients can be monitored over a long period. The nurses involved will identify inappropriate behaviors among the population that lead to obesity and devise ways of addressing them.
