Advantages
The advantages of paternalistic, informative, and shared decision-making models for making decisions are that they empower the individual in making decisions about their health care. The individual can decide what kind of medical treatment they want, the methods of conducting the treatment, what risks to accept, how much information they need before deciding on a course of action, which providers to go with, and so forth (Kujawski et al., 2019). These approaches also increase patient satisfaction because people feel empowered when they have control over their healthcare experience.
Additionally, these approaches reduce complexity in healthcare systems by targeting one person at a time instead of trying to cater to an entire population. Finally, these approaches can be used as part of a combined model, for example shared decision making might be the default approach but the patient could specify that they want to opt out and be considered for either paternalistic or informed decision-making (Kujawski et al., 2019).
Informed choice is a primary component of many health care systems. However, this is often undermined due to lack of access to information related to choices being presented or because individuals are not aware they have choices at all (Rehman, 2016). For example, in the U.K., information about treatment options is often provided immediately before clinicians recommend what actions to take, limiting options by making them appear as the only viable action plan.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of paternalistic, informative, and shared decision-making models for making decisions involve threats to patient autonomy. Patients often do not have any say in their treatment plans.
