The origin of nursing is very different from the modern form of nursing. The associate degree has been in effect since 1958, with its focus being that of direct care for patients. Its curriculum relies heavily on the technical aspect and tasks that require clinical skills. For example, nurses with this qualification believe in data collection, which will assist in creating standardized care. On the other hand, a baccalaureate degree leans towards critical thinking, leadership, and team management. Research is also a massive factor in the decision-making for community health enhancement. Consequently, BSN students have excellent problem-solving skills, which help them make more accurate independent decisions.
The growth in nursing means that modern interprofessional medical teams comprise individuals with a minimum bachelor's education. Therefore, having more BSN-prepared nurses in social work, pharmacy, and physical therapy is only a natural progression in the field of nursing. The definition of quality patient care and safety is constantly changing to fit the skills and competencies required in modern medicine. Hospitals are therefore encouraging nurses to pursue more training to help them respond to complex situations. This is because there is evidence showing that nurse staffing affects the quality of care. According to The National Center for Biotechnology Information, hospitals with higher BSN nurses registered lower mortality and failure to rescue rates.
