For the purpose of this research, an assessment tool for evaluating organizational culture called System-wide Integration of Evidence-based Practice (OCRSIEP) was used to assess the culture of the UnitedHealth Group based in the USA (Wallen et al., 2010). The survey tool consists of a scale that measures the impact of cultural factors on implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the overall theoretical readiness of the organization to incorporate EBP in its systems (Brewer et al., 2013). The study was conducted on health care professionals in Level 1 Trauma Center of UnitedHealth to determine the readiness of the organization to incorporate the evidence obtained from research in its systems, and in particular, the Level 1 Trauma Center. The primary objective of the study was to compare the perceptions between nurse managers and their staff nurses about factors that influence acceptance and execution of EBP in the organization and the barriers that hamper the integration of these practices. In total, 350 individuals were selected randomly, of which 50 were nurse managers, and 300 were staff nurses. These individuals were picked from 8 acute care units in the Trauma Center section of the hospital, and comprehensive interviews were conducted to seek important information concerning the factors and barriers mentioned earlier. Following the survey, the results indicated that there were several barriers that hindered adoption and implementation of research-based evidence in this section of the hospital, similar to many other hospitals (Majid et al., 2011; Tacia et al., 2015). Some of the barriers highlighted by most participants include insufficient staff, inadequate supplies, and lack of enough time to implement EBP. The clinicians mandated with facilitation of adoption and implementation of research-based evidence were nurse managers, who were supposed to act as role models to junior staff. Thus, they were expected to lead the way in enhancing the adoption of EBP by participating in the actual process, providing feedback to the junior staff about their performance, offering adequate resources, and promoting improved distribution of best practices (Kueny et al., 2015).
