Organism and Parasitic Diseases
Parasitism is a condition where one organism cause harms or lives at the expense of another organism. Millions of people across the globe have been affected by parasites leading to mortalities. Helminths, protozoa, and ectoparasites are the three major classifications of parasites causing infections (CDC, 2019a). Protozoa are tiny, unicellular organisms that are parasitic or nonparasitic. The ability of the organisms to reproduce and survive in humans facilitates the emergence of serious infection from a single protozoa organism. Classification of protozoa is based on their style of movement. The classifications are Sarcodina, Ciliophora, Sporozoa, and Mastigophora (CDC, 2019a). Entamoeba histolytica, an organism in the Sarcodina class, is a pathogenic ameba that results in intestinal and extraintestinal diseases.
Additionally, trypanosomes are organisms in the protozoa class causing infections to humans. The African trypanosomes that belong to the brucei species are the leading cause of sleeping sickness illness in individuals (Kato, Matovu, Mugasa, Nanteza, & Alibu, 2016). Lastly, plasmodia organisms are responsible for malaria infections in humans (Charon et al., 2019). The plasmodium species, together with other major species, infect humans with the most virulent P. falciparum.
On the other hand, helminths are huge multicellular microbes usually visible with naked eyes at their adult stages. Similar to protozoa, the organism can be parasitic or nonparasitic. However, helminths cannot reproduce in humans at their adult stage. The three major classifications of helminths parasites in humans are flatworms, roundworms, and thorny-headed worms. Flatworms include flukes and tapeworms. The adult roundworms dwell in the blood, gastrointestinal tract, and lymphatic system (CDC, 2019a). At their larval stage, roundworms can cause illness through the infection of different body tissues. Lastly, adult tho...
