Health education refers to imparting knowledge and skills to patients on their health issues and gaining access to and understanding their medical conditions. Educating patients on various aspects of their illnesses is essential in ensuring informed decision-making on available treatment options and how they would love to receive their treatment. Older adults are among the fast-growing segment of the United States' population, and it has been projected that about 20percent of its population will be aged 65 and above (Poland et al., 2017). This implies a need for older adult education to prepare them and their loved ones for independence in maintaining or improving their health status. As one gets older, their intelligence level declines, and one tends to learn new things slower. I choose to interview a family friend recovering from an elective knee surgical procedure due to osteoarthritis for my essay.
In a personal interview with Mr. Laurence, a 72-year old divorcee is a retired architect and a family friend. He has a daughter who is a registered nurse and a son who followed his suit and pursued civil engineering. The son is married and stays in Canada with his family while the daughter lies and works in New York City. He narrates his experience with healthcare systems after his elective knee surgery. Before the surgery, he met his primary doctor and the orthopedic practitioner, who played a crucial role in preparing him for the surgery. In addition, he received all crucial information before the surgery. For instance, he was informed why he needed to do away with baby aspirins a few days before the surgery and why he needed someone to drive him home afterward. Also, he was advised to get an exercise therapist after the surgery, either at his house or at a rehabilitation facility.
