Although vitamins are required in small quantities in the body, they are synthesized to play crucial functions. This creates the need to understand the various vitamins and how they work in the body, how much each of the vitamins is required in the body, and the types of foods which contain the vitamin in high quantities. This information can help in individual in ensuring that they have the right quantities of vitamins in their bodies and thus observe the proper nutrition for a healthy body.
Retinoid and carotene (preformed vitamin A)
This is commonly referred to as Vitamin A, and it includes retinal esters, retinal, retinol, and retinoic acid. Beta carotene is sometimes converted into vitamin A if there is a need. This vitamin is important for improving vision, and lycopene can help in lowering the risk of prostate cancer (Ford, Green, Haskell, Ahmad, Mazariegos Cordero, Oxley, & Green, 2020). It also plays a crucial role in boosting the immune system and bone growth. Diets that contain a high level of lycopene and carotenoids alpha carotene help in lowering the risk of cancer of the lungs. Further, carotenoids are antioxidants, and foods which are rich in zeaxanthin and lutein help in protecting individuals against cataracts. The recommended amount is M: 900 mcg (3,000 IU) and W: 700 mcg (2,333 IU). In various supplements, vitamin A is reported using international units. Some of the sources of retinoid include eggs, liver, beef, fortified milk, fish, shrimp, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, and butter. Sources of carotene include turnip greens, mangoes, spinach, squash, pumpkins, carrots, and sweet potatoes (Wang, Yu, Kane, & Moise, 2020). Many individual rely on preformed vitamin A from supplements and food.
Thiamin
This is also referred to as vitamin B. Some of its benefits include that it helps in converting food after digestion into energy. It is also important for a healthy and smooth skin, healthy brain, muscles, and hair. It also supports critical nerve function (Ashoori & Saedisomeolia, 2014).
