Through the Diary of a Medical Mission Trip, the challenges of offering medical care during a disaster are outlined. Haiti is a third-world country prone to disasters like earthquakes and cyclones. Based on the video, most challenges arise from a lack of clean water. Other highlighted areas of concern include lack of food and medical supplies. The medical response team also lacked a proper space to assist the disaster victims (Diary of a Medical Mission Trip, 2010). Although the demand for medical services was growing, the region did not have proper hospitals or backup centers to assist the victims.
The nurse has a primary obligation to prevent health-related issues and death during the disaster. The nurse's primary responsibility is to educate the people within the disaster area on water safety standards, emergency response and first aid, and disaster preparation. Professionals need to assess the region to highlight potential risks and mitigate them before the disaster. Moreover, the nurse must also educate the people on the best techniques to evacuate the disaster-prone area before it occurs. The primary intervention can also include equipping community members with emergency medical supplies, food, water, flashlights, and other essential commodities (Al Harthi et al., 2020). This will reduce the threshold of the harm experienced. This intervention is vital before the disaster occurrence phase to reduce injuries and enhance the effectiveness of response efforts.
