One strategy that the nurses can employ to increase their participation in the health care policy-making process to support patient advocacy is by assuming formal leadership roles in the health care system. Strong leadership is essential to redesigning healthcare policies. Therefore, nurses must strive to become leaders, from the boardroom to the bedside, who can collaborate with other health professionals to formulate policies that put the patient first. For instance, registered nurses who work as unit managers and have a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree are in a good position to make well-informed decisions and shape the health policy in their sphere of influence. Unit managers typically supervise nursing staff in their units, supervise budgeting practices, and mediate between staff and middle-upper management. These roles have now expanded to include taking part in the policy-making process where they have the opportunity to negotiate and assert the interests and needs of patients (Catallo et al., 2014).
